Ideation

The original plan was to create an advertisement showcasing various models in a scene. One of the initial ideas was to create an retro style advertisement for a set of boxed cards. After various iterations the concept was changed to show an advertisement for an energy drink that would promote purchasing products from the same brand. A quick sketch was drawn to determine the visual and text layout. The sketch also helped determine various assets that needed to be created such as 3D models and a bright, high contrast background to promote the product.
Legion was used as a brand name to signify a group of products that provide additional value and rewards for customers who continue to purchase brand products. The poster would show that consumers can receive a discount on other Legion products such as cards, toys, and clothing after buying the energy drink.

Assets

Assets were created as 2D illustrations/vectors, text, and 3D models. Models such as the TV, and table did not require any external images and were made in Maya.
Other models such as the Kirby character and TV remote used Maya for modelling plus Figma/Photoshop to for visual flourishes.  For Kirby the face was created first in Figma and mapped using the UV editor in Maya later.  The tv remote numbers and buttons such as “power” or “mute” were exported as vector images first before being overlaid on the model.

Comparison of fonts in 2D and as 3D models.

A purple background was used to provide a distinct background with exaggerated shapes that emulate the style of the 80’s. Michroma was used as the font for the slogan “Join the Legion” and the promotional description due to is visual clarity, futuristic styling, and ability to be imported into modelling software without loss in quality.
Composition

To create the composition models were imported as references into the poster file. This allowed for models to be reused or have materials altered without affecting their original files.
Content was organized from top down, with the slogan and description at the top of the poster space and the models at the bottom half. The Kirby models were aligned on a table to face a television showing an advertisement of the “Legion” energy drink. Various props such as a tv remote and digital cards were placed to add depth to the scene and to show other Legion products. The 2D background was placed on a camera facing plane behind the rest of the models.
To render the poster the camera was locked into position once the models were posed at a correct angel. A resolution gate was set to determine the area being rendered. The poster was then rendered at a custom resolution for image export.

Film gate is the transparent area. It shows the area that will get rendered.
